Behind the Brushstrokes: In Conversation with Hannah Buckle

We had the pleasure to chat with Hannah Buckle, the talented designer behind one of the final prints from our RESORT 24 collection, Saguaro. Gain insight into her inspiration, design process, role at KIVARI and some of the lessons she has learnt throughout her career thus far.

Let’s begin with how you created the Saguaro print?

Each Cactus was hand painted with watercolour paint in a large scale, allowing for depth of colour and detail. The paintings were then scanned, and placed into Photoshop for deep etching, layouts and colour adjustments. Multiple layouts were considered before landing on this design. We wanted to keep this print in realistic tones so hand painting was a great option! Otherwise, I would normally paint it with photoshop brushes so the colour can be changed easily.

What was the inspiration behind this print? An overall theme or concept?

Saguaro national park in Tucson Arizona and a gorgeous vacay spot called The Joshua Tree House.

Favourite part of creating this design?

The initial research is always one of my favourite parts – exploring ideas and sketching. I also love the end of the process, looking at all the elements falling into place on screen and knowing you have hit it.

Any challenges you faced?

Finding imagery of cacti that was right for the print. I didn’t want it looking too spikey or busy.

Favourite KIVARI Silhouette at the moment?

Defina Mini Dress

What is your role at KIVARI and how long have you been on the team?

I am the Textile and Surface Designer and have been at KIVARI for 4 months. I created this print while I was freelancing 15 months ago.

Can you tell us about the most challenging yet rewarding parts of print designing?

The most challenging aspect of print design is balance. Considering colour, scale, element style and technique. Whilst ensuring the design suits the fabrication, is exciting and new, yet on brand, and right for the season and product category. When you get all those aspects right and the print tells a story, it’s magic.

And finally, what is your favourite style in the Saguaro print and why?

Tough one but would have to say the Saguaro Playsuit because it is a perfect summer, beach to bar, versatile outfit. I love how it can be styled with our gold jewellery pieces for dressier occasions too.
