Brittany Cohn Talks Photography

Brand photographer and self-renowned world traveller ~ we have been a long time Instagram fan of  @somegirlbrittany. We talk to Brittany about how she started out in photography and what inspires her when shooting.

What would you say to people starting out in photography/wanting to start out in photography?

This may seem obvious, but take a lot of photos. Spend time practicing and experimenting with whatever camera or equipment you have available, even if it’s just your phone. The more you practice, the better you’ll understand how things like light, colour and texture can affect the subject matter in your photographs and you can start to train your eye to catch the things that you love visually. What I love to shoot might be very different than what you love to shoot. That’s what makes it so much fun!

What inspires you behind the lens?

I love to mix stillness and motion in my portrait photography. Nature is a constant inspiration. I also love props, and use them liberally. A great prop can inspire an entire shoot. My career (before going full-time with photography) was working in props for TV shows like 30 Rock and Orange is the New Black and it’s ingrained in me now to see everything as a potential prop.

Key things to take into account when shooting?

Make sure to be aware of your angles and light. They make a huge difference in the final product and they're not easy to change during the editing process.  I only shoot with natural light, so I have to follow the weather like crazy to ensure I’m not going to be rained on or have too much sun (I’m not a huge fan of harsh shadows). Sometimes I have to reconfigure a shoot day as it's happening to account for wind or the position of the sun. Be open to change and too inspiration!

Your favourite piece from our new Odessa collection?

I have two favourites! I love the versatility of the Odessa Midi Skirt and how it’ll be able to transition through the seasons, but I’m also obsessed with the romance of the Odessa Maxi Dress. Totally stunning.
